Bhava Nirodha Nilaya Projects and Useful Things

I'm often asked what would be useful or what is needed here at BNN. The following is a list in reply. It is updated monthly but please check before bringing large or expensive items.

Dhammasālā Insulation and ceiling

After much deliberation and arguments with my imagination, I've decided not to continue with this project. I believe closing from June through November every year -coinciding with Vassa and hurricane season each year - is the way forward for my own work, study and practice.

Last summer the temperature measured 140 ℉ at the ceiling inside and 107℉ at the floor. With these high temperatures the ceiling fans and a/c don't make the slightest difference. Please join our livestreams until we reopen in November.

Theravada Cuba

Due to the market and legal difficulties created by the U.S. embargo and its increasing sanctions on Cuba, we humbly request only monetary donations at this time. Food and necessary goods can still be purchased in Cuba - up to now - in dollars and euro.

Donations can be received by our international dāna coordinator outside of the United States by Paypal or direct transfer. [Once the donations enter the U.S. or are made to a destination within the U.S. they are subject to the U.S. embargo and sanction legalities which are complex to understand without legal assistance] Donations to purchase data for our vihara mobile phone - there is no landline- and meal and personal hygiene dāna for our two Cuban sāmaneras residing in Sanditthiko Vihara, can be made directly to Cuba or to our International dāna coordinator. Please email our international dāna coordinator for instructions. Note donations will not be tax deductible for income tax purposes.

Medical care in Cuba is no longer free. Our sāmaneras are taken by our Director to medical appointments when needed and their care is paid for.

TC projects include travel for Ayyā Mārajinā, the two Cuban sāmaneras -for training to international monasteries that can host them- and ten precept renunciant Sīvālī. Purchasing solar panels and a solar generator that can power the refrigerator and fans during extended electrical outages, which currently last two days is very important for food safety. They will eventually be used in our rural hermitage when a property is acquired or gifted.

We graciously welcome rent-free use or donation of a small farm in a quiet/isolated area of eastern Havana / Pinar del Rio province with a water well or where a well can be dug. Our community can help rehabilitate the property. Write your text here...
